Switch off the water and power supply, and disconnect all appliances or mechanical tools that conduct electricity. Cover any holes where the water came in so the elements are kept out. Look for rodents and other pests that have come in or have been brought in with the water. Secure heavy furniture that could collapse, or, if possible, remove it completely. Immediately decide if it’s a space that you can continue to be in until help comes.
Call Your Insurance
The next thing to do is to call your insurance company. Even if the damage was caused by a flood, and you don’t have a flood policy, it is still worth investigating. Depending on what caused the water, there could be a way for the policy to cover it, especially if it is no fault of your own.
Remove Valuables
Some things will be damaged beyond repair, however, when possible, move any expensive items from the building. Special equipment, such as computers and the like should be relocated off-site, if possible. Even if they can be placed above the waterline, natural disasters, and building damage will attract criminals.
